Spicing up life with dance to dazzle loved ones

If you are motivated enough, you can learn to dance quickly. However, many people are hesitant to learn any form of dancing, despite a genuine desire to do so. We often fear being judged, which can lead us to avoid bringing the joy of dance into our lives. Dancing is primal and fun, and it can be easily learned with a little effort.

To begin, try learning some dance moves in the privacy of your own home. You don’t need a dance studio or wall of mirrors. Learning to dance without hiring an instructor is entirely doable these days.

There are countless viral video clips on social media and YouTube. Not to mention, instructional tapes and discs are readily available that teach a variety of dances. Not sure what style of dance you want to learn? Start by searching “how to…” followed by the type of dance you’re curious about. The great thing here is that you’re exploring dance with the curtains shut. No one will ever know.

As you try dancing at home, see if your spouse or partner wants to join you on your journey. It can become a weekly tradition as you entertain yourselves and enjoy some exercise. Ironically, dancing rarely feels like working out. If all goes well, it may lead to other types of physical activity with your partner (wink, wink). For many couples, dancing is a highly romantic prelude to other exciting pursuits.

You may find a terrific and occasionally critical audience in your children. They’re wonderful practice partners and are usually quite aware of how a modern dance should look. Additionally, this is a bonding opportunity for the whole family. When it comes to dancing, kids are a lot of fun and are happy to sit back and laugh at mom or dad’s expense. Challenge your children to a “dance off” for a reward like their choice of dinner, ice cream, or a movie. Who will be victorious?

Putting what you’ve learned to good use can be a wonderful experience. You not only gain the advantage of a new activity, but you do so without the anxiety and uneasiness that typically accompanies a formal class. Although performing in front of an audience might be intimidating, you should be prepared for the most unforgiving audience any dance studio can provide. Should you decide to take a class, bear in mind that the other students are likely to be just as apprehensive about their level of ability as you are.

Once you’ve learned some new steps, confidently hit the dance floor the next time you go out or attend a wedding. It doesn’t take much to impress because people love to have a good time with others, regardless of dance skill.

Of course, having a few signature moves in your pocket never hurts.

Happy dancing!
