Love

Are you really in love… or not?

You can feel it. You’re being drawn to him or her. You want to be with the one who moves your heart. You’ve got all of the indicators of being in love. Yet, is it love or is it infatuation? Is it something that will pass with time?

Let’s dig a little deeper here. What’s the difference between infatuation and love? The first distinction is that infatuation is transient. It can vanish quickly.

A great way to put it to the test is to consider all of the characteristics that have made you fall in love with this person.

Now, consider another individual. Assume that the new person of interest possesses the same traits in greater abundance. Consider your options carefully and visualize these as much as possible. Are you still in love, or has your commitment switched?

Try a different scenario. Let’s say you are having a heated argument with your partner. Would they refer to you by different names and argue with you passionately? Are you still in love? Will you return to them afterwards? Or, have the good feelings melted away and you despise them already?

Another thought. Imagine the physical beauty of your beloved slowly fading over the years. As an exercise, pick one of your favorite celebrities and look at photos of them younger and now. Do the same with your partner and picture them much older. Can you still love them after they’ve lost most of their physical appeal?

Love is an emotion that endures over time and is capable of taking conflicts with stride. Love is difficult to define, but when you are in love, you care about your partner more than yourself. With your genuine sweetheart, you become incredibly giving. Is this true for you? If the answer is yes, it is love.

Otherwise, it may be time to let go so that you can find the love of your life.
